A BIT MORE ABOUT MAX
Clinical work
Max Mifsud MD MScRes FRCS(Tr&Orth) FEBOT is a fully certified Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Oxford, UK, working in the Tertiary Centre in Oxford at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. His consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon practice is based in Oxfordshire, and extends into Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. He also serves international patients. He is on the specialist registers of the medical councils of the UK (GMC) and EU. Max is internationally fellowship trained, with fellowships in Paediatric Orthopaedics and Bone Infection (both in Oxford, at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre), in Sarcoma and Joint Reconstruction (in London, at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital), in Hip Preservation (in Bern, Switzerland), and a clinical research fellowship (in Toronto, at the Hospital for Sick Children).
Confident in the inpatient and outpatient management of patients, both in the elective and trauma setting, including complex clinical problems, his surgical logbook, colleagues and referees will attest to his confidence and ability to deal with complex clinical problems, to support colleagues, to teach and supervise trainees, and to ask for help or support when appropriate. To date, he has done over 3200 orthopaedic operations with very few complications and consistently good results.

People often ask what the post-nominals mean. In Max's case, they mean that he has a Medical Doctorate degree (MD), a post-graduate Masters degree in research (MScRes, formerly known as MPhil), his UK Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS(Tr&Orth)) and his European Fellowship Board Exam in Orthopaedics and Trauma (FEBOT).

Languages spoken - he is fluent in English and French, apart from his native Maltese.
Medico-legal Expert Witness work
Through Confiance Orthopaedics, he also has a practice as a Medical Expert, serving patients and lawyers in cases of disputes and litigation, and drafting up Medico-legal reports.

Teaching and Interview Preparation and Coaching
He has a passion for learning and for teaching, and is good at it. He holds a Visiting Lecturer university appointment. He has received formal recognition for his dedication to teaching at under- and post-graduate level, to orthopaedic professionals and to allied health professionals. He tutors post-graduate University students, and is a certified clinical and educational supervisor.

Through Confiance Orthopaedics, Max Mifsud (consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon) and his team also run interview preparation courses for Fellowship and Consultant candidates, with the focus being small group or one-to-one learning and coaching. With a keen understanding of the NHS structures and nuances of interviews at this level, his approach is precise and concise, ensuring candidates (in trauma and orthopaedics, but also in other specialties) are best prepared for interviews of this level.

Research, Publications and Public Speaking
With regards to academia and research, he has a post-graduate research degree (MScRes / MPhil) which he obtained over and above fulltime clinical work. To date, Max has over 22 peer-reviewed publications, 2 book chapters, and over 40 presentations at international and national meetings, for some of which he has won national prizes. He is also actively involved in NIHR-funded research and is the PI for Oxford for PICBone.

Management and leadership
Currently the Governance Lead for the department of Paediatric Orthopaedics in Oxford, and having participated in and led several audits and quality improvement projects at the hospitals he has worked at, Max's aim has always been to deliver excellent patient care in a timely and safe manner. Some of projects he led were ultimately converted into departmental and hospital-wide standard operating procedures. These various QIP not only ensured better and safer patient care, better communication between all health professionals involved in patient care, but also in some instances better coding and therefore tariff for the Trust.
His leadership experience, which is founded on formal management training and extensive multidisciplinary team working, includes at a local level leading his colleagues in managing patients under his care as a consultant, supporting his administrative staff, attending multi-disciplinary clinics in his areas of expertise (including CP, tumours and bone infection amongst others), and participating in clinical governance and resource management including rota management. At a national level, his leadership experience includes holding national orthopaedic association board appointments, AOTrauma chapter chairmanship, directing European resuscitation council courses, and the honour of captaining the Junior Handball National Team of Malta.

Max is the director of Confiance Orthopaedics.
Personal life
Originally from Malta, Max moved to the UK in 2016 to further his training there. After a period of international training and travel, Max took up his prestigious consultant job in Oxford. Married to a Swiss national, Max and his wife (also an orthopaedic surgeon with international training in some of the most reputable centres internationally) live in Oxford. The international nature of his professional and personal life mean he is fluent in English and French, apart from his native Maltese. Outside of work, Max and his wife enjoy long country walks with their family dog, travelling, skiing, and discovering different cuisines. In his younger days, he captained the national team of handball. He now exercises regularly, and his passtimes include rock climbing and generally enjoying the outdoors.
